Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine cherries and brown sugar and spread on bottom of 13-x9-x2-inch glass baking dish. Sprinkle cake mix packet over cherries (reserve crumb packet).
In a small bowl, combine crumb mix packet and almonds; sprinkle over cake mix layer. Place butter slices evenly on top of cake; bake 45–55 minutes, until golden. Let stand 15–20 minutes; serve cake with vanilla ice cream. Makes 6 servings.
