Chocolate Chip Date Cake
1 cup chopped dates
1-1/2 cups boiling water
1 tsp. soda
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
2 well-beaten eggs

1-1/2 cups flour
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. soda
1/2 cup white sugar
1 pkg. chocolate chips
1/2 cup nut meats |
Pour boiling water over dates and 1 tsp.
soda. Allow to cool. Cream shortening with 1 cup sugar. Add
eggs and cooled date mixture. Sift together flour, salt, and
3/4 tsp. soda. Combine with the above mixture. Mix well and
pour into oblong cake pan. For topping, mix the 1/2 cup sugar,
chocolate chips, and nuts. Sprinkle over top of cake batter.
Bake at 350 degrees F. for 35 min.
