Hermits
Desi Butterfield, La Crosse

1 cup soft shortening
2 cups brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
1/2 cup cold coffee
3-1/2 cups flour, sifted
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
2-1/2 cups halved seeded raisins
1-1/4 cups broken nuts

Mix shortening, brown sugar, and eggs thoroughly; stir in cold coffee. Sift the flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon; stir into batter. Mix in raisins and nuts. Chill at least 1 hour. Drop rounded teaspoons, about 2 inches apart, on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees until set, about 8–10 minutes; just until when touched lightly with finger, almost no imprint remains. Makes about 6 dozen 2-1/2-inch cookies.
