Half-Cup Holiday Toffee
Marie Dylla, Hayward/Rochester, MN

1/2 cup chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, cashews, almonds, etc.)
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Additional chopped nuts (optional)

Sprinkle the 1/2 cup nuts in a greased 9-inch pan. Melt butter in a small, heavy saucepan; then add sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches hard crack stage (300 degrees). Pour hot mixture over nuts. Sprinkle with chocolate chips; let stand until softened. Spread chocolate evenly with spatula. If desired, sprinkle with additional nuts. Score with buttered knife while hot. Refrigerate until set. Break into pieces. Yields about 3/4 lb.
