Oatmeal Hermits
Barb Brooks, Reedsburg

3 cups uncooked oatmeal (quick or old-fashioned)
1 cup flour
1 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Heat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients; mix well. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8–10 minutes. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to wire cooling rack. Makes 3 dozen.
            Variation:  For bar cookies, press dough into ungreased 15-x10-inch jelly roll pan. Bake about 17 minutes or until golden brown. Cook completely; cut into bars.
